Overview

Dunaliella bardawil is a powder derived from a species of microalga, which serves as a natural source of carotenoids. It is particularly rich in 9-cis β-carotene, containing an approximate 1:1 ratio of 9-cis and all-trans β-carotene. The 9-cis β-carotene is a precursor to 9-cis retinoic acid, a ligand that can activate both Retinoic Acid Receptors (RARs) and Retinoid X Receptors (RXRs), thus modulating gene expression. Clinical investigations have explored its use as an oral dietary supplement for mild, chronic, plaque-type psoriasis, where it demonstrated efficacy in improving skin lesions without the liver and lipid-related side effects associated with synthetic retinoids. It has also been studied for its potential to raise HDL-cholesterol levels and inhibit atherogenesis. The research was supported by Nikken Sohonsha Corporation and conducted at Sheba Medical Center.
