Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Duraflu is an over-the-counter (OTC) combination drug product developed by Poly Pharmaceuticals for the symptomatic relief of the common cold and influenza. It contains four active ingredients: acetaminophen (325 mg), a non-aspirin pain reliever and fever reducer; dextromethorphan hydrobromide (20 mg), a cough suppressant; guaifenesin (200 mg), an expectorant that helps loosen phlegm; and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (60 mg), a nasal decongestant. The product is formulated as an oral tablet and is intended to alleviate symptoms such as minor aches and pains, headache, fever, nasal congestion, and cough. Acetaminophen acts primarily in the central nervous system to reduce pain and fever, while dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex. Guaifenesin works by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of respiratory tract secretions, and pseudoephedrine acts as a sympathomimetic agent to reduce nasal mucosal swelling.
