Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Durasert is a proprietary, miniaturized, injectable drug delivery system developed for sustained intraocular delivery of small molecule therapeutics to the eye. It is designed as a micro-insert implant that can be administered via intravitreal injection in an office-based setting. The technology enables controlled, zero-order release of drugs over extended periods—ranging from six months up to three years—with high drug loading efficiency (up to 90% of the insert). Durasert has been used in both bioerodible and non-bioerodible formulations and underpins several FDA-approved products for ophthalmic diseases such as posterior segment uveitis, diabetic macular edema (DME), and cytomegalovirus retinitis. Its mechanism centers on providing long-term local therapy while minimizing systemic exposure and reducing treatment burden compared to frequent injections or daily eye drops[3][5][6]. The platform has demonstrated efficacy in preventing recurrence of posterior segment uveitis flares for at least one year with a favorable safety profile[3][5].
