Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Durasphere EXP is an injectable, non-biodegradable bulking agent developed and manufactured by Carbon Medical Technologies. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in adult women caused by intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD). The product consists of pyrolytic carbon-coated zirconium oxide beads, ranging in size from 90 to 212 microns, which are suspended in a water-based carrier gel containing 2.8% beta-glucan. Durasphere EXP is administered via submucosal injection at the bladder neck to augment soft tissue, creating increased bulk that helps close the bladder neck and restore urinary control. This formulation replaced the original Durasphere product, which utilized larger particles (212-500 microns) that were more difficult to inject. Beyond its primary indication, Durasphere EXP has been used off-label for the treatment of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in pediatric patients.
