Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Durogesic D-TRANS is a matrix-type transdermal patch formulation of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid analgesic. Developed by Janssen (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), the D-TRANS technology incorporates the active drug directly into the adhesive polymer matrix, which allows for a thinner patch compared to original reservoir designs and reduces the risk of accidental leakage. The patch is designed to provide continuous systemic delivery of fentanyl over a 72-hour period. Fentanyl acts as a potent agonist at the mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, providing effective management for chronic, severe pain, particularly in patients with cancer or those requiring long-term opioid therapy who are already opioid-tolerant.
