Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Durysta (bimatoprost sustained-release implant) is a sterile, biodegradable intracameral implant developed by AbbVie (following its acquisition of Allergan) for the reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The implant consists of a solid polymer matrix (PLGA) that slowly degrades to release bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog and prostamide receptor agonist, directly into the anterior chamber of the eye. Bimatoprost lowers IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through both the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways. This sustained-release delivery system is designed to provide continuous therapeutic effect for several months, potentially addressing the clinical challenge of patient non-adherence to daily topical eye drop regimens. The Phase 3 ATHENA study compared the efficacy and safety of Durysta to selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), confirming its role as a potent alternative to traditional glaucoma therapies.
