Dutasteride + ethanol refers to a clinical research combination used by UConn Health to investigate the role of neuroactive steroids in alcohol use disorder (AUD). Dutasteride is a dual inhibitor of the 5-alpha reductase (5AR) enzymes (Type 1 and Type 2), which are responsible for converting steroid precursors into neuroactive steroids such as allopregnanolone. These steroids are positive allosteric modulators of the GABAA receptor and are believed to mediate the reinforcing and subjective effects of alcohol. In clinical trials led by UConn Health and supported by the NIAAA, dutasteride is administered to block the production of these steroids to determine if it reduces heavy drinking or alters the physiological and subjective response to ethanol. This research aims to identify 5AR inhibition as a novel therapeutic strategy for managing AUD.
