DWJ1483 is a long-acting, sustained-release injectable formulation of leuprolide acetate (also known as leuprorelin) being developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical. It is specifically designed for the treatment of central precocious puberty (CPP), a condition characterized by the premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. As a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor agonist, leuprolide initially stimulates the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). However, continuous administration via a long-acting depot formulation leads to the downregulation and desensitization of GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. This results in the suppression of gonadotropin secretion and a subsequent reduction in sex steroid levels (testosterone in males and estradiol in females) to prepubertal concentrations, thereby halting the progression of premature sexual development and optimizing final adult height.
