Overview

DWP717 is a botulinum toxin type A candidate being developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical and its subsidiary Great Bear Pharmaceutical. As a biopharmaceutical neurotoxin, it functions as a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that specifically targets and cleaves the synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25), a key component of the SNARE protein complex. By disrupting this complex, DWP717 prevents the fusion of acetylcholine-containing vesicles with the neuronal membrane, thereby inhibiting the release of acetylcholine into the neuromuscular junction. This mechanism results in localized muscle relaxation and is being investigated for both aesthetic applications, such as the treatment of glabellar lines, and therapeutic applications for pain relief, including conditions like migraine or chronic muscle pain. While Daewoong already markets prabotulinumtoxinA (Nabota/DWP450), DWP717 represents a distinct pipeline asset aimed at expanding the company's portfolio in the toxin market.
