Overview

DWRX2008 is a topical ophthalmic nanoparticle eye-drop formulation of enavogliflozin, a selective small-molecule sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, being developed by Daewoong Therapeutics for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema.[1][2][3][9] Unlike intravitreal anti-VEGF biologics, DWRX2008 is designed for self-administration as an eye drop to both inhibit hyperglycemia-driven vascular leakage and normalize dysfunctional energy metabolism in the diabetic retina, leveraging formulation technology that enhances delivery to posterior segment tissues while limiting systemic exposure.[1][2][3][9] Preclinical pharmacokinetic studies in animals show effective distribution of enavogliflozin to the retina with relatively low systemic levels, and the product has entered Phase 1 clinical evaluation after MFDS approval in South Korea as a first-in-class eye-drop approach for diabetic eye disease.[2][3][7][9]
