Overview

Dycal is a rigid-setting, self-curing, radiopaque calcium hydroxide composition used primarily in dentistry as a cavity liner and for direct and indirect pulp capping. It acts as a protective barrier under restorative materials such as adhesives, varnishes, filling materials, cements, and other base materials. The main mechanism of action is the stimulation of secondary dentin formation by providing an alkaline environment that encourages odontoblast activity while protecting the dental pulp from chemical irritation. It is biocompatible but can be cytotoxic to certain cell types in vitro; however, it has a long record of clinical success for vital pulp therapy. The product does not inhibit the polymerization of acrylic or composite restorations and offers quick setting times with good handling characteristics[1][2][4][5][6][8].
