Overview

Dz13 DNAzyme is an experimental nucleic acid-based therapeutic developed by researchers at the University of New South Wales. It is a synthetic, single-stranded 10-23 DNAzyme designed to target and catalytically cleave the messenger RNA (mRNA) of c-Jun, a transcription factor critical for cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and inflammation. By inhibiting c-Jun expression, Dz13 aims to treat various conditions, including basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and inflammatory diseases like arthritis. Clinical development, including a Phase I/Ib trial for melanoma metastases, was halted in 2013 following research misconduct allegations, although the lead investigator was subsequently cleared.
