E-CEL UVEC (Engineered Cord Endothelial - Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells) is an investigational allogeneic cell therapy developed by Angiocrine Bioscience. The therapy consists of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) that have been genetically engineered to express the E4ORF1 gene from the adenovirus. This modification activates the Akt signaling pathway within the cells, enabling them to survive and maintain their vascular phenotype without the need for exogenous serum or growth factors. When administered, E-CEL UVEC cells function as a 'vascular niche,' secreting a variety of angiocrine factors that promote tissue repair, support stem cell expansion, and mitigate damage to the microenvironment caused by high-dose chemotherapy or injury. The lead candidate, AB-205, is currently in Phase 3 development for the prevention of severe multi-organ complications in lymphoma patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation. Additionally, E-CEL UVEC is being evaluated in Phase 1 trials as an adjunct therapy for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
