Overview

E-diol is a monoterpenoid epoxidiol compound, specifically (1S,2S,3R,4S,6R)-1-methyl-4-(prop-1-en-2-yl)-7-oxabicyclo [4.1.0]heptan-2,3-diol, currently under investigation for its neuroprotective and mitoprotective properties in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It acts by stabilizing mitochondrial membrane potential and restoring the function of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes, particularly after inhibition of complex I. In preclinical models, E-diol has been shown to reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), prevent the loss of dopaminergic neurons, and alleviate both motor and non-motor pathological symptoms. The name is also used in scientific literature to refer to destruxin E-diol, a metabolite of the cyclic depsipeptide destruxin E produced by entomopathogenic fungi.
