Drug intelligence / Profile preview
E. coli bacteriophage Un is a lytic bacteriophage being developed by the G. Eliava Institute of Bacteriophages, Microbiology and Virology and the Agricultural University of Georgia for the treatment of Escherichia coli infections, including those caused by antibiotic-resistant and ESBL-producing strains. As a phage therapy, it specifically targets and infects E. coli bacteria, replicating within the host cells and ultimately causing bacterial lysis. Preclinical pharmacokinetic studies in mice have evaluated both purified and unpurified preparations of the phage administered via intravenous and subcutaneous routes, demonstrating systemic biodistribution, the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, and stability in plasma and serum.
