Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Earth-fried Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as *Tu Chao Bai Zhu*) is a processed herbal preparation of the dried rhizome of *Atractylodes macrocephala* Koidz. (family Asteraceae). The processing method involves stir-frying the raw rhizome slices with refined clay or earth (often stove-in-heart earth, *Fu Long Gan*), which adsorbs some of the herb's volatile essential oils (such as atractylol and atractylenolides) and moderates its harsh, drying nature. This traditional processing focuses the herb's therapeutic action on the middle burner (Spleen and Stomach), enhancing its ability to warm and tonify Spleen Qi, dry dampness, and stop chronic diarrhea. It is widely used in traditional Chinese herbal formulas to treat Spleen deficiency syndromes characterized by chronic diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal distension, poor appetite, and fatigue.
