EBA-175 RII-NG is a recombinant, non-glycosylated vaccine antigen derived from the Region II of the Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte binding antigen 175 (EBA-175). This protein domain is critical for parasite invasion of human red blood cells by mediating binding to sialic acid residues on glycophorin A. The vaccine is designed to induce antibodies that block this interaction and thereby inhibit parasite entry into erythrocytes. EBA-175 RII-NG has been evaluated in phase I clinical trials in both malaria-naïve and semi-immune adults, demonstrating safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity. The antigen is produced using recombinant expression systems (notably Pichia pastoris yeast) and formulated with aluminum phosphate adjuvant[1][6][8]. Its primary indication is as a candidate malaria vaccine targeting blood-stage infection.
