Overview
Ebastine is a second-generation H1 receptor antagonist traditionally used for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Cannabis Delivery Sciences, a subsidiary of Lexaria Bioscience, is developing a reformulated version of ebastine using the proprietary DehydraTECH drug delivery platform for potential antiviral applications against COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). DehydraTECH is designed to enhance the bioavailability, speed of onset, and brain penetration of lipophilic active pharmaceutical ingredients. In the context of COVID-19, ebastine has been identified in screening studies as a potential inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), also known as 3CLpro, which is essential for viral replication. By combining ebastine with DehydraTECH, the developer aims to optimize the delivery and efficacy of this small molecule as an antiviral agent. The program is currently in the preclinical stage.
