EBC 1013 is a semi-synthetic small molecule belonging to the epoxy-tigliane class, developed by QBiotics for topical treatment of chronic and acute wounds, including venous leg ulcers and burns. It is derived from compounds found in the Queensland blushwood tree (Fontainea picrosperma). The drug acts through a multifactorial mechanism that includes disruption of bacterial biofilms, stimulation of innate immune responses (notably protein kinase C-dependent neutrophil activation and NETosis), upregulation of wound healing-associated cytokines and chemokines, induction of antimicrobial peptides in keratinocytes and fibroblasts, modulation of fibroblast differentiation/function, and promotion of keratinocyte migration. Preclinical studies have shown accelerated closure of infected wounds with minimal scarring. Clinical development is ongoing with Phase I/II trials for venous leg ulcers[1][5][6][3][4].
