Overview

Eberconazole is a broad-spectrum imidazole antifungal drug primarily used as a topical cream for the treatment of cutaneous fungal infections such as dermatophytosis (tinea), candidiasis (including resistant strains), and pityriasis versicolor. It was developed and approved in Spain in 2015 and is marketed under several brand names. The drug acts by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis in fungal cell membranes through inhibition of the lanosterol 14α-demethylase enzyme. This disruption leads to structural and functional changes in the membrane that are lethal or inhibitory to fungi depending on concentration—fungicidal at higher concentrations and fungistatic at lower ones. In addition to its antifungal activity, eberconazole exhibits anti-inflammatory effects attributed to inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase (and less so cyclooxygenase-2), making it particularly useful for inflamed dermatophytic infections[1][3][4][6][7].
