Ebola Zaire vaccine (live, attenuated) is a recombinant, replication-competent viral vector vaccine used for the prevention of disease caused by the Zaire ebolavirus. The most widely used formulation is based on a live, attenuated vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) that has been genetically engineered to express the main glycoprotein from the Zaire ebolavirus. This modification provokes a strong neutralizing immune response against the Ebola virus. The primary mechanism of action involves induction of both cellular and humoral immunity to protect against future infection with Zaire ebolavirus. The first-generation product was developed by scientists at Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory and later licensed to Newlink Genetics and then Merck for further development and commercialization as Ervebo. It is approved in multiple regions including the US and EU for use in adults and children 12 months or older[1][3][8].
