EBV-001 is a multi-antigen, DNA-free virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate developed by EBViously, a spin-off from Helmholtz Munich and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF). The vaccine is designed to mimic the complexity of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by presenting more than 50 viral antigens, including a previously overlooked protein, in their authentic structural conformation. These empty VLP shells lack viral genetic material, ensuring they are non-infectious while eliciting a broad and potent humoral and cellular immune response. EBV-001 is primarily being developed to prevent infectious mononucleosis (IM) and associated post-infectious fatigue (ME/CFS). Additionally, it is being explored for the prevention of EBV-associated cancers, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD), and potentially reducing the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS), for which IM is a known risk factor.
