Overview

The EBV-LMP-2 peptide vaccine is an experimental immunotherapy developed by the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) for the treatment and prevention of recurrence in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). NPC is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, and the tumor cells typically express the EBV latent membrane protein 2 (LMP-2). This vaccine consists of specific HLA-restricted peptides (specifically LMP-2:340-349 for HLA-A*1101 and LMP-2:419-427 for HLA-A*2402) emulsified with the adjuvant Montanide ISA-51. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the patient's immune system, specifically cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs), to recognize and eliminate EBV-positive cancer cells expressing the LMP-2 protein.
