EBV-specific autologous cytotoxic T lymphocytes (EBV-CTLs) are a form of adoptive immunotherapy where a patient's own T cells are collected, expanded ex vivo with specificity for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antigens, and then reinfused into the patient. These cells are designed to target and eliminate EBV-infected cells, including EBV-associated malignancies. The therapy works by reconstituting EBV-specific immune responses, allowing the expanded T cells to recognize and destroy cells expressing EBV antigens. EBV-CTLs can persist in patients for up to 3 years after infusion, traffic to tumor sites, and provide long-term immune surveillance against EBV-related diseases.
