EC-104 is a novel, investigational intravitreal corticosteroid implant designed for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME). The implant contains fluocinolone acetonide (FA) and is engineered to provide a durable drug release over six months, enabling convenient twice-yearly dosing. It specifically targets patients with DME who have shown suboptimal response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies and have previously tolerated locally administered corticosteroids without significant intraocular pressure increases. The mechanism of action involves local delivery of the corticosteroid directly into the vitreous cavity, reducing inflammation and vascular leakage associated with DME. EC-104 is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials comparing two doses (0.14 mg and 0.092 mg FA) against Ozurdex in this patient population[1][3][4][5][6][8].
