Overview

EC23 is a synthetic, photostable analog of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). It acts as a potent pan-agonist of the retinoic acid receptors (RARs), specifically targeting RARα, RARβ, and RARγ. Unlike natural retinoids, EC23 is chemically stable and does not degrade upon exposure to light, making it a reliable tool for controlling cellular differentiation in research settings. It is primarily utilized in stem cell biology to induce neuronal differentiation. Recent experimental studies have also explored its therapeutic potential in ophthalmology, specifically for promoting lymphangiogenesis and blood vessel density in the conjunctiva. In animal models of glaucoma filtration surgery, EC23 has demonstrated the ability to rescue conjunctival lymphatics from the inhibitory effects of anti-fibrotic agents like mitomycin C, suggesting a potential role in improving surgical outcomes by modulating wound healing.
