ecadotril

Ecadotril is the (S)-enantiomer of racecadotril. It functions as a neutral endopeptidase (NEP) inhibitor, specifically targeting enkephalinase (also known as neprilysin or neutral endopeptidase 24.11). By inhibiting this enzyme, ecadotril prevents the rapid degradation of endogenous enkephalins, which are naturally occurring opioid peptides. The prolonged action of enkephalins on delta-opioid receptors in the intestinal epithelium leads to a reduction in the secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen. This antisecretory effect helps to alleviate diarrhea by decreasing stool volume and frequency without affecting normal intestinal motility. While primarily recognized for its antidiarrheal properties, some research has also explored its potential as an antihypertensive agent due to its role in modulating enkephalin levels, which can lead to vasodilation and blood pressure reduction.
