ECCEC is an investigational cell therapy consisting of cultured corneal endothelial cells derived from donor corneal tissue. Developed by National Taiwan University Hospital, it is intended for the treatment of corneal endothelial cell dysfunction, a condition characterized by the loss of the inner layer of corneal cells, leading to persistent corneal edema and vision impairment. The treatment involves the ex vivo expansion of donor endothelial cells, which are then delivered via a single intracameral injection into the patient's anterior chamber. Following injection, the cells are intended to settle and adhere to the denuded Descemet's membrane, where they reconstitute a functional endothelial layer capable of restoring corneal transparency and fluid balance. This approach aims to provide a less invasive alternative to traditional corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) by specifically replacing the dysfunctional cell layer.
