Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Echinacea angustifolia root is a botanical extract derived from the narrow-leaf coneflower, widely utilized in dietary supplements for its immunomodulatory and potential anxiolytic properties. Standardized extracts, such as Polinacea and AnxioCalm, are characterized by specific concentrations of echinacoside and alkamides (isobutylamides). The root's immunomodulatory activity is primarily mediated through the regulation of cytokine gene expression, including the up-regulation of IL-2 and IL-8 and the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha and IL-6. In the context of mental health, specific preparations have been investigated for the treatment of mild to moderate anxiety and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), although clinical results have been inconsistent and regulatory assessments by the EFSA have found the evidence for specific health claims to be insufficient.
