Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Echinacea extract is a botanical preparation derived from species of the *Echinacea* genus, most notably *Echinacea purpurea*, *Echinacea angustifolia*, and *Echinacea pallida*. It is primarily utilized as an immunomodulatory agent for the prevention and symptomatic relief of the common cold and other upper respiratory tract infections. The extract contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including alkamides, caffeic acid derivatives (such as cichoric acid and echinacoside), and polysaccharides, which are thought to stimulate the innate immune system by activating macrophages and increasing cytokine production. While widely available as a dietary supplement, it has also been investigated for its potential anti-inflammatory effects in conditions like ulcerative colitis and as an adjuvant in various therapeutic regimens.
