Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Echinacea purpurea flower extract is a botanical extract derived from the flowers of the purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). It is classified as a herbal medicine or dietary supplement and is produced by multiple manufacturers. [1] The extract contains various bioactive compounds, including alkamides, caffeic acid derivatives (such as chicoric acid and caftaric acid), and polysaccharides. [2, 5] It is primarily used for its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system, such as enhancing phagocytosis, and modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8. [2, 5, 13] It is commonly used to prevent or treat upper respiratory tract infections, such as the common cold, though clinical evidence is mixed. [2, 12] It is also used topically for skin conditions like eczema and to promote wound healing. [12, 15]
