Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Echinacea purpurea leaf extract is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the purple coneflower (*Echinacea purpurea* L.). It is characterized by a high concentration of phenolic compounds, specifically hydroxycinnamic acids such as chicoric, caftaric, and chlorogenic acids. The extract exhibits significant anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, including Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), and Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Research indicates that these effects are particularly relevant for intestinal health, as the extract's bioactivity is partially maintained following simulated gastrointestinal digestion. It is primarily investigated for its potential in treating inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), ulcerative colitis, and other gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions.
