Overview

*Echis pyramidum* venom is a complex biological mixture derived from the Egyptian saw-scaled viper, currently under investigation for its potential as an antineoplastic agent. Research indicates that the venom possesses significant cytotoxic properties against various human cancer cell lines, most notably breast cancer (MCF-7) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2). Its mechanism of action involves the induction of oxidative stress, evidenced by elevated levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and alterations in glutathione (GSH) content, which leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and the activation of apoptotic pathways. Furthermore, the venom has been shown to cause genomic DNA damage and membrane disruption, as indicated by the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). In vitro assays have demonstrated that the venom is particularly potent against breast cancer cells, with an IC50 value of approximately 3.48 μg/ml.
