ECI-102 is a novel ophthalmic drug developed as a platelet-rich plasma-derived growth factor eye drop. It is formulated to provide accelerated healing of persistent epithelial defects on the eye, specifically targeting neurotrophic keratitis, an orphan disease. ECI-102 contains an increased concentration of growth factors compared to related products and leverages human platelet-rich plasma combined with proprietary mucoadhesive excipients such as hyaluronic acid or chitosan. The mechanism involves delivering a near-physiologic replacement for natural tears, including proteins, electrolytes, antimicrobial compounds, and various growth factors that support corneal epithelial repair and inhibit inflammatory cytokines. Preclinical studies have shown enhanced corneal healing properties and anti-inflammatory effects through increased goblet cell numbers and mucin expression in the conjunctiva[1][2].
