Ecklonia cava extract is a dietary supplement derived from the edible brown algae *Ecklonia cava*, which grows in the waters off Japan and Korea. [2] It is rich in a class of polyphenols called phlorotannins, with notable compounds including dieckol, eckol, 6,6'-bieckol, and phlorofucofuroeckol A. [8, 11] These components are believed to be responsible for its bioactive properties. The extract is investigated for a wide range of health benefits, including anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. [15] Proposed mechanisms of action include the inhibition of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes like alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, modulation of lipid metabolism, reduction of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β, and neuroprotection through the reduction of beta-amyloid aggregation and neuroinflammation. [5, 7] It is being studied in clinical trials for conditions like type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. It has received approval as a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) from the US FDA and as a Novel Food Ingredient (NFI) in the European Union under names like Seapolynol®. [3]
