Overview

**Ecklonia cava polyphenols** are a complex mixture of phlorotannins (polyphenolic compounds) extracted from the brown seaweed *Ecklonia cava*, most notably found off the coast of Korea and Japan. The main polyphenols include dieckol, eckol, phlorofucofuroeckol A, bieckol, and others. These compounds exhibit potent antioxidant effects by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulating enzymes such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase. In both preclinical and clinical studies, Ecklonia cava polyphenols have demonstrated mechanisms including inhibition of cytochrome P450 2E1, upregulation of alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, modulation of AMPK and SIRT1 activity (enhancing metabolic homeostasis), and inhibition of carbohydrate digestive enzymes such as alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase. These mechanisms underlie reported physiological effects such as decreased hepatic injury from ethanol, reduced fat accumulation, improved lipid profiles, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and potentially neuroprotective activities. The ingredient is primarily studied and marketed as a dietary supplement or functional food for metabolic, cardiovascular, and liver health, and being investigated for glycemic control and protection against oxidative tissue damage[1][2][3][4][5][6].
