**Econazole** is a topical antifungal medication primarily used to treat various fungal and yeast infections of the skin, including athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), ringworm (tinea corporis), tinea versicolor, and cutaneous candidiasis[2][3][4][5][7]. It is available as a cream or foam for topical application. Econazole acts by inhibiting lanosterol 14-α demethylase, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme essential for converting lanosterol to ergosterol—a critical component of fungal cell membranes. This inhibition disrupts membrane integrity, leading to increased permeability and leakage of cellular contents, ultimately killing the fungus[4][8]. Additional mechanisms may include interference with membrane phospholipids and impairment of other cellular processes in fungi[4]. Econazole has some activity against Gram-positive bacteria but is mainly used as an antifungal agent.
