Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Econiche** is a veterinary vaccine developed by Bioniche Life Sciences for cattle to prevent the shedding of **Escherichia coli O157** (E. coli O157), a major zoonotic pathogen that contaminates food and water, leading to severe human illnesses such as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Administered via injection, it stimulates an immune response that reduces bacterial colonization in the bovine intestinal tract by up to 92% in vaccinated animals, thereby lowering environmental contamination risks without causing disease in cattle themselves, who serve as primary reservoirs. The vaccine received full licensing approval in Canada and was later approved in the UK, with production scaled at Bioniche's GMP-compliant facility in Belleville, Ontario; its Animal Health business, including Econiche, was sold to Vétoquinol in 2014.[1][3][9][11]
