Overview

Ecopipam is a first-in-class, selective dopamine D1 and D5 receptor antagonist under development for the treatment of central nervous system disorders, including Tourette syndrome, Lesch–Nyhan syndrome, speech disorders (such as stuttering), restless legs syndrome, and pathological gambling. Unlike currently approved antipsychotics for Tourette syndrome that target dopamine D2 receptors and are associated with significant side effects such as weight gain and movement disorders, ecopipam selectively blocks the actions of dopamine at the D1 receptor family. This selectivity results in a lower risk of common antipsychotic-associated adverse events. Ecopipam has shown efficacy in reducing tics in children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome without observable evidence of metabolic or extrapyramidal side effects. The drug is administered orally and is being developed by Emalex Biosciences[1][3][5][6][7].
