Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EcoVag is a probiotic vaginal capsule formulation composed of two specific strains of lactic acid-producing bacteria: *Lactobacillus gasseri* DSM 14869 and *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* DSM 14870. Originally isolated from the vaginal epithelial cells of healthy women, these strains were selected for their high adhesive capacity and ability to maintain a healthy vaginal microbiota. The mechanism involves the colonization of the vaginal mucosa, acidification of the environment to a low pH (approximately 3.8), and the production of antimicrobial factors such as hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocins. EcoVag is primarily used as an adjunct to standard antibiotic or antifungal treatments to provide a long-term cure and reduce the rate of relapse in women with bacterial vaginosis (BV) and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC).
