Ecromeximab (KW-2871) is a chimeric (mouse/human) IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibody designed to target the ganglioside GD3, a carbohydrate antigen that is highly expressed on the surface of neuroectodermal tumors, including malignant melanoma, glioma, and neuroblastoma. Developed by Kyowa Kirin in collaboration with the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, ecromeximab binds specifically to GD3 and mediates tumor cell destruction through antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC). Clinical development primarily focused on the treatment of metastatic melanoma, where it was evaluated as a monotherapy and in combination with high-dose interferon-alpha 2b. Although early-phase trials established a maximum tolerated dose and demonstrated some evidence of disease stabilization, the development of ecromeximab appears to have been discontinued as it is no longer active in the developer's pipeline.
