Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ectoal is a sterile, preservative-free ophthalmic solution developed by Alfa Intes. It contains 2% ectoin (ectoine), a natural extremolyte and cytoprotective amino acid derivative produced by halophilic bacteria. Ectoal is marketed as a CE Class I medical device indicated for the prevention and symptomatic treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. It works through a physical mechanism of action, where ectoin binds water molecules to form a stable, protective hydration shell (hydro-complex) over the ocular surface. This shield stabilizes cell membranes, reduces inflammation, and prevents allergens from contacting and penetrating the conjunctival epithelium, thereby relieving symptoms such as itching, redness, and excessive tearing.
