ectoin

Ectoin is a naturally occurring cyclic amino acid derivative produced by extremophile microorganisms to protect themselves from environmental stressors such as high salinity, temperature extremes, and UV radiation. It acts as an osmolyte and stabilizes proteins and cell membranes by forming a protective water shell (the "ectoine hydrocomplex") around biomolecules. This mechanism helps maintain membrane integrity and reduces inflammatory responses by limiting the release of stress mediators. Ectoin is used topically in medical products for conditions like allergic rhinitis (hay fever), dry eyes, atopic dermatitis, and other inflammatory or barrier-disrupted skin diseases. Its effectiveness in nasal sprays for hay fever has been shown to be comparable to cromoglycate with excellent tolerability. It is also widely used in cosmetics for skin protection against dryness and UV damage[1][4][5][6][7].
