Overview

Ectoin Allergy is a medical device product line developed by Bitop AG, consisting of a nasal spray and eye drops containing 2% ectoine. It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Ectoine is a natural small molecule (extremolyte) that functions through a non-pharmacological, physical mode of action. It interacts with water molecules to form a protective, water-rich shield known as the Ectoin-Hydro-Complex on the surface of mucosal membranes. This complex stabilizes the lipid bilayer of cell membranes and enhances the barrier function of the nasal and ocular tissues, physically preventing aeroallergens from interacting with the cell surface. By reducing allergen-membrane interactions, Ectoin Allergy effectively mitigates inflammation and alleviates symptoms such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, and itchy eyes without the systemic side effects or pharmacological interactions typical of antihistamines or corticosteroids.
