Bentrio (AM-301) is a preservative-free, drug-free nasal spray developed by Altamira Therapeutics and licensed to Nuance Pharma for the Greater China market. It is designed to protect against airborne allergens and viruses. The formulation contains ectoine, a natural extremolyte that forms a protective hydration film (the Ectoin Hydro Complex) on the nasal mucosa. This physical barrier traps inhaled particles such as pollen, house dust mites, and viruses (including SARS-CoV-2 and influenza), preventing them from contacting and infecting the nasal epithelium. By providing a mechanical shield and moisturizing the nasal lining, Bentrio alleviates allergic symptoms and reduces the risk of viral respiratory infections. It is classified as a medical device in several jurisdictions due to its physical mode of action.
