ED-University of Arizona-Asthma

ED-University of Arizona-Asthma refers to the therapeutic intervention protocol evaluated in the ED-SAMS (ED-initiated School-based Asthma Medication Supervision) clinical trial. Developed by the University of Arizona, this program is designed to reduce emergency department (ED) recidivism among children aged 6 to 12 with persistent asthma by addressing medication non-adherence. The intervention consists of a pharmacological regimen including a once-daily budesonide dry powder inhaler (360 μg), oral prednisolone, and as-needed albuterol sulfate. The core of the program is a behavioral delivery model where the administration of the inhaled corticosteroid (budesonide) is supervised by school nurses in the school setting and by caregivers at home. By initiating this supervised controller therapy at the point of ED discharge, the program aims to improve long-term asthma control and prevent repeat acute exacerbations in high-risk pediatric populations.
