Overview

Edaravone dexcamphorol (Sanbexin) is a multi-target neuroprotective fixed-dose combination therapy developed by Simcere Pharmaceutical for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). It consists of edaravone, a potent free radical scavenger, and dexcamphorol (also known as (+)-borneol), a bicyclic monoterpene. Edaravone acts by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, thereby protecting neurons, glia, and vascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress-induced damage. Dexcamphorol complements this activity by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β, reducing neuroinflammation, and potentially enhancing the permeability of the blood–brain barrier to facilitate drug delivery. The combination was approved in China in 2020 following the TASTE trial, which demonstrated superior clinical outcomes in improving functional recovery compared to edaravone monotherapy.
