edaravone dexcanol

Edaravone dexcanol (also known as edaravone and dexborneol) is a fixed-dose combination therapy developed for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. It consists of two active components: edaravone, a potent free radical scavenger and antioxidant, and dexborneol (the (+)-isomer of borneol), which possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Edaravone acts by eliminating hydroxyl radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, thereby protecting neurons from oxidative stress during ischemia-reperfusion injury. Dexborneol complements this by suppressing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), thereby reducing the neuroinflammatory response. The combination was developed by Simcere Pharmaceutical and received marketing approval in China in 2020. It is typically administered via intravenous infusion within the early window of stroke onset to salvage the ischemic penumbra and improve functional outcomes.
