Edetate calcium disodium and succimer are small molecule chelating agents being investigated by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as an adjunctive therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Traditionally used to treat heavy metal poisoning, these agents are hypothesized to reduce the levels of toxic metals in the bone marrow and blood, which may improve the bone marrow microenvironment and enhance the efficacy of standard chemotherapy. In the Phase I trial NCT03630991, edetate calcium disodium is administered intravenously while succimer is given orally to establish the maximum tolerated dose and evaluate clinical outcomes such as remission rates in patients with these myeloid malignancies.
