Overview
PrefGel (Straumann PrefGel) is a topical dental conditioning agent consisting of a 24% concentration of edetic acid (EDTA) formulated in a neutral pH gel. Developed and manufactured by Straumann, it is primarily utilized during periodontal and peri-implant surgical procedures to decontaminate and condition root and implant surfaces. As a chelating agent, PrefGel binds to calcium ions to effectively remove the smear layer and expose the collagenous matrix of the dentin or clean the titanium surface of dental implants. This surface conditioning facilitates the subsequent adsorption of regenerative materials, such as enamel matrix derivatives (e.g., Emdogain), to promote tissue attachment and regeneration. PrefGel is clinically indicated for the surgical management of peri-implantitis and chronic periodontitis to improve regenerative outcomes.
